Broken Blender? don’t worry!

Last night as we were cleaning up from dinner I did something stupid. I was dumping water out of some glass bowls that were stacked together and one of them slipped out of my hand and landed on my blender. The bowl survived, the blender, not so much. I was devestated. I use the thing almost every day to make a protein shake for breakfast. I know this won’t work for everyone, but if yours breaks, you should try it. You might get ‘lucky’.
So, knowing that I’d have to make an emergency trip to Bed, Bath, and Beyond today, I went onto facebook to see if my friends had any suggestions that went beyond buying a vitamix. A $300-$500 blender is just not in my budget. I like my Osterizer. It might not be the prettiest thing in my kitchen, but it gets the job done, and its been with me for over 15 years. A friend from high school suggested that it might work if I put the blade attachment on a mason jar. Well, I got up from my computer and raced into the kitchen. I grabbed a jar from my canning surplus, and took the blade housing off the damaged blender and put them together. It worked! I danced around the kitchen!

here’s how it works.

you take an empty jar
and fill it with your stuff. In my case 1 cup of vanilla rice milk, 1 scoop of spiru tein chocolate protein powder, and 1 tabelspoon peanut butter, and screw the blade housing onto it
and then you turn it upside down and put it on your blender. My children thought this was hysterical. I have to admit. It did look a little funny.
and voilla!

Breakfast was saved! And since I drank it out of the ‘blender,’ I actually have less stuff to wash. I’m sure I’ll replace the blender….eventually. But I think I’ll just replace the glass….this works so well, I don’t want to risk having a blender that I can’t use a mason jar with. I did a little looking around online and saw that this can also be used as a spice grinder. I’m all for multi-tasking, and since I don’t own a real spice grinder, I might start using this to grind spices when the need arises. I feel so smart for having asked my friends their advice!
